Cleanup of residential areas began in 1986 to remove contaminated soils from over 7,000 properties within the Bunker Hill Superfund Site. Contaminated material was left in place under a protective clean layer of barrier material. As long as these clean barriers remain in place, homeowners and their families are kept safe from exposure to metals below the barriers.

Through the Institutional Controls Program (ICP), you can continue to maintain your ICP barrier by doing the following:
- Obtain a permit. ICP permits are required for interior or exterior work.
- Dispose of contaminated soils and other materials at designated soil disposal locations.
- Obtain property information about lead hazards for real estate disclosures.
- Obtain free training and licensing for contractors. As homeowners, it is your responsibility to ensure all contractors working on your property are licensed to work through the ICP.
- Receive one cubic yard of soil or gravel for small, permitted projects and maintenance of barriers.
- Receive various free health and safety supplies for use during a home renovation.
